How to drive more economically
There are a number of ways to help reduce your fuel consumption when driving and it’s a great way to help contribute to saving hundreds of pounds each year on fuel.
Stick to the speed limit
It’s important that when driving you stick to the speed limits, not only is it a legal requirement but going faster considerably contributes to using more fuel and is more impactful on the planet. Instead of driving at 70mph on the motorway, opt for 60mph and on average you can save 9% more on fuel.
Plan your trips ahead of time
Planning your trips ahead is a great way to be a more economical driver. It’s always good to check your route before setting off, as getting lost or being stuck in traffic uses more fuel and is less sustainable to the planet.
Switch off your air-conditioning
If you’re using your vehicle’s air-conditioning while driving at low speeds, this can contribute towards increasing your fuel consumption. When travelling at higher speeds, the effects of air-con are less noticeable. Instead, open your car's windows to help regulate air flow in the vehicle.
However, it is important to use your air-con at least once a week as this will help to keep the system in good condition and working for longer.
Have regular vehicle checks
There are a number of maintenance checks you can perform to your vehicle to ensure that it’s in the best condition possible, so you can drive more economically. Getting your car serviced regularly has many advantages, from giving you peace of mind that everything is in good working order, to helping to save money in the long run.
Frequently check your vehicle’s oil levels, as low oil can cause your engine to fail, which is a costly repair. You want the oil to be at a good level, so checking it monthly will ensure that it doesn’t get too low or stale.
The final check you can do to your vehicle is to check your tyres pressure, as under-inflated or flat tyres will use more fuel. If they are looking a little under-inflated, you can top them up yourself at your local petrol station. If your tyre is looking flat however, you may want to take it to your local garage to get repaired.
